TOP TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST TIME AT THE GYM

Congratulate yourself. You’ve just taken the first step to a new healthier lifestyle. Now you need to just keep yourself motivated, so why not try some of the following simple tips to keep you interested and see those results.

Your first time at the gym can be an intimidating experience. You may not know how to use certain pieces of equipment, or maybe it’s crowded and you’re unsure about etiquette. Well, I’m here to help. Let’s guide you through the first time, to make sure you keep coming back so you can reach those fitness goals.

In most gyms, you’ll find cross-trainers, bikes, rowing machines and treadmills, which are great for getting warmed up and improving your cardiovascular fitness. The exercise bikes and cross trainers are especially good to start off with as they are extremely low impact, meaning less force is being put through your joints, making them perfect for anyone who has spent a long time away from exercise. They often have instructions on them and they are easy to use.

You should also give the resistance machines a go. A balanced workout is a key to success and you won’t necessarily hit your targets if you focus purely on cardiovascular exercise. Start off by doing 3-4 sets of 10 or 12 repetitions on each machine, building up the amount of weight you’re lifting as and when you feel comfortable. It’s very important not to over-push yourself at the first couple of sessions to avoid injuries.

If you got to the free weights area make sure your technique is on point with the exercises you do. And try to say away from the heavyweights at the beginning before you are sure that your technique is perfect.

Remember, when you start out, to keep it simple and not to push yourself too hard and make sure you’re enjoying it. On that first day in the gym and in the weeks, that follow, the most important thing is that you show up, and then keep showing up.
